Today is Sunday, the Lord’s Day, and it is unique, because as we venerate the Lord’s Resurrection, we celebrate the Solemnity of All Saints.
Well, before I talk about the first reading or the Gospel I want to comment on the second reading.
In the Gospel reading we have just heard, Our Lord responds to the question, “what is the greatest commandment”. The question “what is the greatest commandment” was not posed in good faith – it was a test, it was a trap. Last week, Jesus responded in a masterful way to the question “should we pay the tax”, and this Sunday, he also answers in a way that silences his enemies.
In the Gospel, we heard the Parable of the Marriage Banquet of the King’s Son, the response of those invited to the banquet, and the situation of the guest without the wedding robe. It is also Thanksgiving weekend, and we are grateful for the many things that we have received.
The readings from this Sunday bring us the example of the vineyard, God’s garden, which is supposed to bring good fruit and an abundant harvest.
On this, the 26th Sunday of Ordinary Time, the second half of the reading from St. Paul’s Letter to the Philippians is a stunningly beautiful poem about the self-emptying of Jesus the Christ.
